Mike Weir MPMike Weir MP, SNP Spokesperson on Pensions, says Gordon Brown is complicit in creating the pensions problem after reports revealed he is attempting to undermine the Lord Turner report on pension reform which will appear next week.

Mr Weir reiterated his belief that the straightforward option was a Citizens Pension which could be easily funded by reforming the system of tax relief for private pensions.

Mr Weir said:

"Gordon Brown fails to recognise he is part of the problem on pensions. By undermining the Turner Report he just shows how he can't face up to his complicity in creating this problem.

"While I may not agree with the Turner Report's apparent support for raising the retirement age to 67 many other aspects have been encouraging. Support for restoration of a link between pensions and earnings and a more generous non-means tested state pension are two major planks I do support.

"For Gordon Brown to suggest that such a Citizens Pension is "unaffordable" is breathtaking. It is his policy of tax relief for private pensions where more than half the cost of the relief on contributions can be received by the richest taxpayers which creates that problem.

"Brown should face reality and accept the SNP's proposals for a universal Citizen's Pension is right instead of arrogantly keeping a means-testing system which is a disincentive towards saving for retirement."

ENDS.
