SNP Treasury spokesperson, Stewart Hosie MP, has ridiculed Home Secretary Charles Clarke for a parliamentary answer which suggests Belfast is in Scotland.
Stewart Hosie MP Mr Hosie had asked the Home Office for the number of Home Office staff working in Scotland. In reply, Mr Clarke allocates the 148 staff working in the Belfast passport office to Scotland (see section for UKPA).The answer also shows that Scotland has only 287 of 22,070 jobs with the Home Office's core department - just 1.3% - despite the fact that the Home Office deals with a range of "UK wide" issues including anti-terrorism policy, immigration, ID cards and passports. Commenting Mr Hosie said: "This hardly comes as a surprise from a government that knows little and cares less about Scotland. "It is certainly an embarrassing mistake, and one that points to a deeper problem with London based ministers. "In the view of London Labour it seems all points north appear pretty much the same. "Belfast is a wonderful city, but it is certainly not in Scotland. The Home Office need to wake up to the reality - and perhaps once they have worked out where Scotland and Northern Ireland are, they could start transferring up some of their well paid London based civil servant jobs."
